Public Transport in Ghent

Ghent has a well-organised public transport system.

Public transport in the city is well organized. Buses and trams will take you to every possible destination in and around Ghent from early in the morning till late at night. If you take the tram or bus only a few times a year, we recommend you to purchase a single ticket.

How to obtain a single ticket (from cheap to more expensive)?

  • M-ticket: Install the app from one of De Lijn partners on your phone. Complete the one-time registration process and choose a payment method.
  • SMS-ticket: sms the order code ‘DL’ to the short number 4884.
  • At the ticketmachine, Lijnwinkel, from the driver

If you opt for an M- or SMS-ticket, make sure you validate the ticket before you get on the bus. A single ticket is valid for 60 minutes from the moment of your first validation. Within that frame, you can hop on and hop off as many times as you like.

You can also buy a ‘Lijn card’ that allows you to make 10 trips with up to a 50% discount.

Where to obtain the 10-ride ‘Lijn card?

  • Presale point (supermarket, NMBS-station, …)
  • Ticket machine
  • Lijnwinkel
  • E-shop

If you will be using buses and trams for a longer period, it might be a lot cheaper to buy a season ticket. Depending on your age, you can buy a “Buzzy Pazz” (6 - 24y) or an “Omnipas” (+25y). Both tickets are valid on any bus and/or tram of “De Lijn”. You can also use these season tickets in other Flemish cities, e.g. Aalst, Antwerp, Bruges, Genk, Hasselt, Kortrijk, Leuven, Malines, Ostend, Roeselare, Sint-Niklaas and Turnhout and the entire Belgian coast.

More information can be obtained at the De Lijn shops (Lijnwinkels, see below).
