Castle of the Counts

Address: Sint-Veerleplein 11 - 9000 Gent

The actual shape of the castle was mainly carried out under the reign of Philip of Alsace, count of Flanders from 1157 to 1191. Formerly, three successive houses stood there. Philip conducted his building campaign to impress and control the Ghent inhabitants. As the city expanded, the castle lost its military function and became the residence of the counts.

In 1353, the castle was abandoned for a more comfortable residence. From then on it received different public and management functions. It also served as a prison, with dungeons and torture rooms. In the 19th century, the Steen (stone building) fell in private hands, and was turned into a textile mill.

In 1887 the City of Ghent and the State bought the building and started the dismantling, followed by huge restoration works for the World Exhibition of 1913. Today, the Castle of the Counts is a touristic attraction and the historical rooms serve as a scenery for concerts, theatrical performances etc.
